a5c7b9f00b Haunted by his failure to save a child from a suicidal madman, hostage negotiator Jeff Tally leaves Los Angeles to become police chief of upscale suburb Bristo Camino. But the ghosts of Tally's previous field come back to haunt him when two brothers and their mysterious traveling companion Mars Krupchek take a suburbanite family hostage after a failed robbery. Unbenknownst to the gunmen, their hostage is actually a numbers runner for West Coast kingpin Sonny Benza, and the house contains evidence that put him away. Facing heat from associates in New York, Benza kidnaps Tally's wife and daughter and blackmails him into procuring the incriminating evidence. But the situation escalates even further when Tally discovers that Mars is a serial killer who is eyeing the hostages, and possibly his accomplices, to be his next victims.
In a small town in California, the chief of police Jeff Talley is facing relationship problems with his teenager daughter. One year later, he was the prime police negotiator in Los Angeles, but after an unsuccessful negotiation, he gave-up his position and decided to move with his family to a calmer life. When three punks invade the house of Walter Smith, a wealthy accountant, and jeopardize his family, holding them hostage, Jeff's family is abducted by powerful criminals to force him to retrieve a DVD with bank accountings' information kept in Walter's office.
Starts slow and I was ambivalent but not bored for ten minutes. The suspense starts mounting and even though this movie is extremely dark and is counterpoint to villainous Ben Foster's clothing (black leather fetishes come to mind). The comparisons to the innocent childs blond & blue Jimmy Bennett is unavoidable but not so sillyto relieve the high tension abounding. Well notsilly/irritatingpolice captain Tina Lifford's acting/voice/character.<br/><br/>One thing disturbs me is the visual metaphor regarding the 'blood is on your hands' scenes which I recall at least four of. Pretty sickening but I doubt any deeper meaning than to make a sort of weak script more riveting.<br/><br/>In my opinion the best Bruce Willis; (he does look under 40Police Chief Jeff Talley); film since Pulp Fiction.., but that's just me.
I like wasting hours of my life watching good TV and good movies, but if every movie ever made from this point forward was onlygoodHOSTAGE, I would start doing something useful with my life and stop watching movies altogether. Bad acting by Willis (who is often good, but not here), plus a horribly clichéd and predictable plot filled with convenient contrivances throughout equals a 'no-need-to-see'movie. The bad guy who played the character MARS was the best actor of the lot, with the teenage girl coming in second. Oh, and the direction was oftentimes inappropriate - they were treating thisan action film when the premise of the movie virtually demands it be treateda taut suspense thriller with more 'down-to-earth- camera angles and less 'sexy Hollywood' pan shots. For a good Willis movie, rewatch Die Hard, Pulp Fiction or Unbreakable.
What sends this initially tense thriller over the precipice is a plot scheme that never knows when enough is enough.
